Rangers led Eagles on the path to knowledge this spring at Saluda Shoals Park.
This was not an aviary outreach, but rather, it was an educational one as second grade students from Reuben Elementary School learned from “Ranger Chris.” The students observed natural habitats and saw wildlife.
“This class has had a knack for finding insects and other creatures on the playground this year and having their teachers help identify them,” said Betsy Petersen, RES second grade teacher. “This trip gave them opportunities to see plants and animals that they may not find in Silverstreet.”
She and Larry Bell, RES second grade teacher, were impressed with the thoughtful questions raised by RES students.
“You could tell from the questions being asked that there was genuine learning taking place. That is so rewarding to see from our students whether it be in the classroom, on a field trip or in another setting,” Bell said.
As the trip ended, Saluda Shoals staff commented on how well-behaved and focused the students were. That feedback, coupled with the teachers’ observations showed Eagles who were soaring to be the best they could be.
